The Danish Chamber Orchestra celebrates the music of Kim Larsen
In January and February 2027, the Danish Chamber Orchestra will celebrate the music of one of Denmark’s greatest artists and composers, travelling across the country with songs from Kim Larsen’s remarkable catalogue and career.
A unique, shared treasury of songs that continues to bring generations together. The concert series features outstanding Danish voices: Jesper Binzer (D-A-D), Sofie Dopha, Mathias Ranch and Caroline Henderson. Tickets on sale at underholdningsorkester.dk/kimlarsen.
“Kim Larsen’s songs have become part of our shared language in a rare way, doing so with both humour and seriousness,” begins John Frandsen, director of the Danish Chamber Orchestra. “It says almost everything that ‘Om lidt’ has, over the years, become one of Denmark’s most frequently used farewell songs, even finding its way into both Højskolesangbogen and Kirkesangbogen. It is precisely the power of the songs, their resonance and the connection they create that form our starting point as we bring Kim Larsen’s words and melodies into a symphonic world.”
The Danish Chamber Orchestra will draw on the catalogue of Kim Larsen’s impressive solo career as they tour the country in winter 2027. From the legendary 1973 debut LP ‘Værsgo’, through the iconic 1980s albums ‘Midt Om Natten’ and ‘Forklædt Som Voksen’, to almost 25 years of acclaimed recordings with Kjukken, the music offers an exceptionally broad sweep of Danish musical history for the evening’s soloists to explore and reinterpret.
“I am looking forward to interpreting Kim Larsen’s songs with the Danish Chamber Orchestra,” says Caroline Henderson. “He was one of Denmark’s greatest songwriters and personalities, whose words and melodies left a deep and lasting impression on our shared musical heritage. It will be a great honour to offer my interpretation of the songs.”
Mathias Ranch adds:
“You say yes to interpreting Larsen’s music with a certain sense of awe. Whether we sing his songs around a campfire, with friends at morning assemblies in Danish schools or at the bar in a smoky pub, Kim’s voice and songs embody a timeless popular spirit that brings us together. He was the greatest. And I think that is because he made us see ourselves and one another in the music he gave us, young and old alike. It is an enormous gift that we will always carry with us, and for which we can only offer him a humble thank you.”
Mathias Ranch is one of several voices joining the Danish Chamber Orchestra on stage, alongside jazz diva Caroline Henderson, D-A-D frontman Jesper Binzer and Sofie Dopha.
We can safely promise communal singing and perhaps a tear or two when the Danish Chamber Orchestra offer their interpretations of the music of one of Denmark’s most significant and beloved songwriters, whose work remains powerful in its melodies, its language and the songs we share.
