“We love our country, but most at midsummer.”
We all know Holger Drachmann’s words and sing them together when we gather around “Midsommervisen” in the glow of the midsummer bonfires, connecting a whole country year after year, summer after summer. For many of us, midsummer is a powerful image of togetherness and closeness: a shared feeling we experience, take in and pass on to one another.
“Midsommer” is therefore the perfect name for what will hopefully become a new midsummer tradition and concert experience. Led by director Andreas Vetö, the Danish Chamber Orchestra, in collaboration with Musikhuset Aarhus and DR Koncerthuset, invites audiences to a summer concert with four of Denmark’s finest voices: Annisette Koppel, Pernille Rosendahl, Dorthe Gerlach and eee gee (Emma Grankvist).
“It is a fantastic range of singers we get to present at this year’s Midsommer concerts, with Annisette, Pernille, Dorthe and Emma fronting the Danish Chamber Orchestra. Three generations of distinctive voices spanning pop, rock, folk, jazz, country and almost everything in between. In the magic and warmth of midsummer, it can only be a very special, life-affirming experience,” says Andreas Vetö of the concerts, taking place outdoors at Grimhøjgaard just outside Aarhus and the following day in the beautiful surroundings of DR Koncertsalen in Copenhagen.
This quartet is quite a coup for the summer’s musical landscape.
For more than 50 years, Annisette Koppel has been the voice of The Savage Rose. The Danish band debuted in 1968 and is known for some of the most influential rock releases of the 1970s, including ‘Dødens Triumf’ and ‘Wild Child’, and, not least, Annisette’s soulful voice: a force of nature in Danish music, then and now.
Pernille Rosendahl made her entrance with one of the most loved and influential bands of the 2000s, Swan Lee.
Since then, her artistic talent has developed in several directions. Particularly important are her acclaimed debut solo album “Dark Bird” in 2016 and “The Hurt” in 2019, both helping establish Pernille Rosendahl as one of the most versatile and sought-after live artists on the Danish music scene.
This year, Dorthe Gerlach celebrates 20 years with Hush. Since the band broke through with banjo, lap steel and acoustic guitar on A Lifetime, her signature vibrato has made her one of Denmark’s most loved voices. In 2015, she released her Danish-language solo debut Natlys. With songs such as Ingers Ting and Montebello, she has established herself as a unique songwriter and storyteller.
Emma Grankvist established herself as eee gee with ‘Winning’ in 2022, a debut album of international stature that swept Danish critics off their feet. Last year’s challenging second album, ‘SHE-REX’, did the same, impressively adding new shades of disco and soul to Emma’s remarkable songwriting.
See you at Midsommer 2024!
