Mew and the Danish Chamber Orchestra are heading out on a Northern European tour
In 2022, Mew and the Danish Chamber Orchestra demonstrated how they merge into one magical entity as they took the stage together in sold out venues across Denmark. In 2024, this fantastic collaboration can once again be experienced - this time also in England, Norway, and Finland.
Last year, Mew and the Danish Chamber Orchestra delivered a series of unique and unforgettable concerts around Denmark. The tour was a great success, and now they have decided to embark on another joint musical journey in the spring of 2024.
This time, however, not only the Danes will be able to experience Mew and the Danish Chamber Orchestra. Together, they are embarking on what will be the Danish Chamber Orchestra’s first tour with a contemporary music act in Northern Europe with stops in England, Norway, and Finland.
The tour begins in Helsinki, Finland, on March 30th, and the last stop is Odeon in Odense, Denmark, on April 12th. Quite sensationally, the concert in England takes place at The Barbican in London, which is home to both The London Symphony Orchestra and The BBC Symphony Orchestra.
The Danish Chamber Orchestra are continuously developing new concert formats with artists, bands, and international organizers - concerts that neither of the involved parties could have created on their own. As ideas and talents unite, surprising formats and formations have emerged again and again.
As such, The Danish Chamber Orchestra has established itself as a strong artistic partner for a wide range of contemporary rock and pop acts, including Mads Langer, Pernille Rosendahl, TV·2, Burhan G - and, of course, Mew.
A natural fusion
For more than 25 years, Mew has distinguished itself as one of the most innovative and remarkable bands, both in Denmark and internationally. Time and again, Mew has challenged familiar frameworks for live acts and created new spaces, resulting in grand musical moments.
Together with the Danish Chamber Orchestra, Mew will once again dive into the band’s impressive list of songs and revitalize their impressive back catalogue.
“Mew’s music is born with a symphonic sound that is extremely well-suited for the concert halls we will be visiting on the upcoming tour. When performed with our orchestra, Mew’s sound soars even higher into the dreamy symphonic layers,” says Andreas Vetö, who is both the director of the Danish Chamber Orchestra and the conductor at the concerts. He further says:
“We have garnered a lot of exciting international attention already, thanks to our successful album releases and concerts within the classical universe. Now we’re looking forward to introducing Europe to new concert formats, which have already proven their popularity among the Danes. As an orchestra, we’re proud to challenge conventions. Along with Mew, we are taking a big step outside the comfort zone of classical music, and we can’t wait to experience how the music and energy from the stage will excite the audience.”
The Danish Chamber Orchestra's recordings of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms have earned them international acclaim. Notably, they secured the "Best Collection" award at the ICMA (International Classic Music Awards) in 2015 for "Mozart: 45 Symphonies" (dacapo). In 2020, their transcendent interpretation of Beethoven's Symphonies earned them two ICMA awards, including the coveted "Recording of the Year" accolade. Their excellence extended to German audiences, securing the Opus Klassik award in the "Symphonic Music" category for Beethoven's Symphonies.
Two decades since the big breakthrough
Mew, whose members are singer Jonas Bjerre, drummer Silas Graae, and bassist Johan Wohlert, has released a total of nine studio albums.
The first was the debut A Triumph For Man in 1997, which was followed by the breakthrough album Frengers in 2003. This album contains classics like 156, Am I Wry? No, She Came Home for Christmas, and the 9-minute epic Comforting Sounds.
Frengers paved the way for the uncompromising and boundary-pushing band, whose sound is as fragile and delicate as it is celestial, catchy, and progressive.
Great enthusiasm both on stage and among the audience
The symphonic collaboration with the Danish Chamber Orchestra is not only a celebration of Mew’s musical career. It is also an opportunity for the audience to be swept away by the interplay that occurs when the two orchestras merge into one magical entity.
“From our tour last year, we know that this is a combination that arouses great enthusiasm - among those of us on stage and certainly among the audience as well. We are truly looking forward to hitting the road again with the Danish Chamber Orchestra, especially because we now get to visit some of Northern Europe’s most beautiful concert halls,” says Johan Wohlert, Mew’s bassist.
