Dorthe Gerlach announces a nationwide tour with the Danish Chamber Orchestra
“Entering a creative space with the Danish Chamber Orchestra is like going from painting with primary colours to suddenly having a palette of a thousand colours.”
Dorthe Gerlach and the Danish Chamber Orchestra are no strangers. They have shared the stage at midsummer concerts and, notably, on HUSH’s previous tour with the orchestra. Now, for the first time, they will visit Denmark’s major concert halls with a programme in which Dorthe’s Danish solo songs unfold in new symphonic colours.
For more than two decades, Dorthe Gerlach has been a distinctive voice in Danish music, both as one half of HUSH and as a solo artist with her Danish-language songs. She is known for her characteristic voice, personal lyrics and special presence on stage. With songs such as Natlys, Ingers Ting, Montebello and Plastiksvanebåd, she has combined poetry and storytelling with a rare ability to connect with audiences.
“I really love this orchestra. They play divinely and have a particular feel for the meeting between classical and popular musical traditions. Entering a creative space with the Danish Chamber Orchestra is like going from painting with primary colours to suddenly having a palette of a thousand colours,” says Dorthe Gerlach. “My ambition is for us to present as many colours as possible in this show: both the great collective organism and the distinctive qualities of the individual instrumental sections.”
The Danish Chamber Orchestra is one of the Nordic region’s leading ensembles, known for bridging classical and popular music and creating vivid concert experiences with great finesse. Its director, John Frandsen, says:
“Dorthe is one of Denmark’s great storytellers. She has a voice that goes straight to the heart and an ability to make her songs intimate and relevant. It is a great joy for us to encounter her world and let the orchestra reflect and amplify it. We look forward to sharing that experience with audiences across the country.”
New arrangements, new colours
The tour features entirely new orchestral arrangements of Gerlach’s Danish solo songs, which gain new dimensions through their meeting with symphonic sounds.
“What is so very beautiful is experiencing the songs being reborn in new colours. I may have sung a song many times and think I know every facet of it, but suddenly entirely different lines strike and move me because the arrangement shines a different light into the song,” she says.
