A memorial concert for Nicolai Munch-Hansen

A memorial concert for Nicolai Munch-Hansen

20 February 2027 marks ten years since Nicolai Munch-Hansen’s sudden and tragic death. To mark the occasion, some of his closest friends and colleagues have come together to remember him with two concerts during this year’s winter jazz festival.

Nicolai was a much-loved and well-liked musician and composer on the Danish music scene. He released three jazz albums of his own compositions. His final album, ‘Det flimrende lys over Brabrands sø’, with lyrics by Peter Laugesen, won the DMA Jazz award for Album of the Year in 2017.

Nicolai was also known as a versatile musician who recorded and toured with Tim Christensen, Jens Unmack, Steffen Brandt and Nicolai Nørlund, among others, as well as Malian international star Rokia Traoré. He was married to Kira Skov and, during their thirteen years together until his death, was her closest musical collaborator.

At the memorial concerts, audiences can look forward to a performance in two parts.

The first features songs from ‘Det flimrende lys over Brabrands sø’, with Steen Jørgensen, Kira Skov and Anna Brønsted as the principal soloists.

In the second set, his jazz ensemble will perform compositions from his three albums, and Kira will also appear with a couple of the songs they wrote together. Peter Laugesen will give readings in both sets.

Audiences can look forward to an evening with some of Denmark’s finest musicians, celebrating their friend and the music he created.
